This is a sign/symptom of underlying disease. Clinically; jaundice is defined as yellowish discolouration of the skin, white of the eyes and mucous membranes caused by excessive accumulation of bilirubin present in the plasma and tissue fluids. This bilirubin is produced when there is breakdown of red blood cells. Typically, the concentration of bilirubin in plasma must exceed 1.5 mg/dL, three times the usual value of approximately 0.5 mg/dL, for the coloration to be easily visible.



1. Alcohol.
2. Inflammation of liver by virus or bacteria.
3. Gall stones.
4. Cirrhosis.
5. Certain drugs.
6. In newborns it may be a normal phenomenon or due to blood group.
7. incompatibility.


Yellow urine, Pruritis, anorexia, mailaise, fever etc.


Complications of jaundice include sepsis especially cholangitis, biliary cirrhosis, pancreatitis, coagulopathy, renal and liver failure. Other complications are related to the underlying disease and the procedures employed in the diagnosis and management of individual diseases.


1. Avoid fatty food like meat and animal products, dairy products like milk, paneer, cheese etc.
2. Avoid intake of alcohol.
3. Two to three glasses of fresh vegetable juice especially carrot daily is helpful.
4. Sugarcane juice is helpful in jaundice.
5. Take a diet rich in carbohydrates.
